The 53 foot high Buddha began during the Sui Dynasty. The early Buddhist scripture, The Digha Nikaya contain sayings in which the Buddha specifically discourages the making of representations of himself after he died. The Buddha tended to be represented as a symbol. The presence by the Buddha was by images. The Buddha was presented as a part of a symbol of the Buddhist's Triple Jewels. In sculptures it portrayed the Buddha in human form because the qualities of purity and spiritually. When the Buddha was appeared in the first century, artist showed no interest in sculpting the human form properly. But later the Buddha came to posses a smooth and perfectly proportioned foreshortening. Over the next two centuries the Buddha combined together and was carried out to many schools or Buddhist art. The Buddha was either carved or molded from expensive materials(marble and gold). The placement of the hands is the most important in viewing the Buddha. The placement of hands was meanings known in the Buddhist world. Mudra symbolizes the Buddha connection of worldly attachments. The reclining Buddha is usually seen as a representation of the Buddha's state of enlightenment just prior to his death. The various statues are distinguished by material(stone, wood, concrete, bronze, or steel)
