The Great Wall Of China During the Sui Dynasty
This is a picture of broken segment of the Great Wall Of China built
by the Sui Dynasty.
The Great Wall of China was originally built in 221 BC to keep out invaders from the
north, but was reinforced and built upon during the Sui Dynasty to prevent different invaders from
attacking. The Great Wall of China was changed during the Sui dynasty four times under the
reign of Wendi. In 581, A new segment of the Great Wall was added to the original and only took
20 days to build. Another section was added to The Great Wall measuring 217 miles from
Lingwu County to Suide County. This major construction project was started in 585. In 586,
workers repaired sections of The Great Wall as well as constructing a few fortresses to protect
the Sui border. A last new section of The Great Wall was built in 587, but there is no record here
today to give any more information about this segment of The Great Wall.
Under the rule of Yangdi, The Great Wall underwent two last construction projects during
the Sui Dynasty. One of which was constructed in 607 by millions of people and ran from Youyu
County in China to Toketo County in Mongolia. One last segment running from Xining City to a
an eastern terminus which was not recorded.Unlike the additions to The Great Wall during the
rule of Wendi, the segments constructed under Yangdi’s reign had no purpose other than
showing his power.
